Cleaning Your Dishwasher With Kool-Aid

About a year ago I wanted to clean my dishwasher and looked up a few ways on the internet. I learned that you can run the dishwasher with a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid to clean it. I have been using lemonade Kool-Aid (or off brand) in my dishwasher for a year now, and have liked it. It doesn't get it perfectly clean, but it is better off than doing nothing and it is easy to do. Just pour a packet into your detergent dish, close the lid and run your dishwasher. I looked it up on the internet and found an article about it at Real Simple. You have to use the lemonade flavor because it has citric acid in it and it is the citric acid that removes the stains. If you tried any other flavor you could have a real mess on your hands. So stock up on lemonade Kool-Aid while it is on sale this summer!

  1. Well, I guess without the sugar it wouldn't be sticky. Interesting. I wonder who thought of it first - "My dishwasher is so dirty. I know, I'll try Kool-Aid. Hmm. Tropical Punch didn't work so well, let's try something that won't stain like, say, lemonade." I'm sure that's exactly how it went down.

  6. First of all, thanks for stopping by my blog :) I'm SO glad you enjoyed the brownies! We actually stuck them in the fridge to keep them fresh and they taste really good cold!! I, too, loved that the ingredients were all ones that you ordinarily have on hand!

As for the dishwasher tip...you may have just saved the day! I was going crazy trying to think of a way to remove some stains--I think I may just happen to have a packet of lemonade flavored Kool-Aid...can't wait to try it!

  12. Thanks for stopping by at Domestic Dork!

This tip is right up my alley...that is, if I ever get around to cleaning my $%&^#% dishwasher! I hate that thing! It's a {broken} portable and it barely gets my dishes clean. I can't wait until I have a real dishwasher some day. Then maybe I won't resent cleaning it. :P

  16. Couldn't you just use lemon juice? I have used vinegar as well and it works great... the dishes don't smell like it at all... but it does smell when pouring it in. I don't mind rotating with lemon juice :)
